The condition is closely associated with atherosclerosis, which is a common disorder of the arteries. Atherosclerosis occurs when substances like fat, cholesterol, etc. develop on the walls of the arteries and form substance known as plaque. In Atheroembolic renal disease, the crystal of cholesterol breaks off from the lining of the arteries and move into the blood stream. After that, in the process of circulation, the crystals get stuck in arterioles and cause intense pain and swelling, thereby causing harm to the kidneys and other body parts. In most of the condition it is believed that Atherosclerosis of the aorta is the main cause of AERD. AERD can occur without cause also.
